The ruin of a hunting castle hidden in the forests above the Vltava.
Karlův Castle was founded in the second half of the 14th century by Charles IV, who made it a relaxing place and a base for hunting events. It used to be a Gothic building that was made accessible by a moat with a drawbridge. Today it is surrounded by a moat with a massive rampart, and the castle chapel has been preserved. There is a legend about a hidden wine cellar, which is guarded by an evil dog.
The place can be found above the Vltava River near the Hněvkovice Dam and we can reach it along the red tourist trail from the Hluboká-Zámostí train station or from Purkarec. If you choose a hike from Hluboká nad Vltavou, prepare yourself for an eight-kilometer route that leads through the romantic river valley and is more suitable for individuals without children.
