Port 1560 Gallery in cooperation with SČUG Hollar invites you to the exhibition South Bohemia through the eyes of Hollar members.
The exhibition of the Association of Czech Graphic Artists (SČUG) Hollar focuses thematically on the South Bohemian landscape, which has inspired many of its current members. The diverse selection of exhibited works reflects the diversity of the artistic techniques used and shows a certain degree of stylization and abstraction in individual graphic sheets. And it is precisely the different approaches and views of the topic that create a seemingly inhomogeneous, but very original contemporary "picture" of South Bohemia, captured through the eyes of the Hollar members.
Curators: Pavel Piekar, Lenka Zajícová
South Bohemia has fascinated and inspired many generations of artists and writers since time immemorial with its pensive mood and melancholic atmosphere, thus directly inviting them to capture it on canvas and paper. The image of the landscape and local people was aptly described by Josef Holeček at the end of the 19th century in his epic "Ours": "Behind the two mountains from us is the birthplace of Hus. Just across the meadow is the birthplace of Petr Chelčický. A day's walk is to the birthplace of Žižkov. The landscape of South Bohemia in general is serious, quiet, pensive. You are surrounded by silence, in which every voice disappears like a stone thrown into water. The silence is so immense that it seems as if it wants you to hear the dark rumble of the earth under the rattling wheels of the Hussite carts at a distance of five centuries. A special longing takes hold of your soul, a strange feeling that, to my knowledge, only South Bohemians of the Czech tribe have and which is the cornerstone of their psychology.”
