Did you know that on card sheets you can find an abundance of well-known, less well-known or perhaps completely unknown personalities from different corners of the world, fields and periods? The new exhibition presents some of the themes that appear on the cards.
With the invention of printing, the card game, documented in the Czech lands since the Middle Ages, began to spread very quickly. The shape of regular cards has gradually settled into the look that you probably remember at least from your childhood. Apart from these well-known card sheets, however, sets of cards began to emerge based on a social order commemorating heroes and personalities from various fields of this or that country. These cards were also used for the game, but at the same time they educated the players (for example, the quartet with medallions of scientists, artists, inventors...) or were used to promote the products of companies and in political campaigns. Some sets, on the other hand, were only commemorative, related to a certain event, be it historical or perhaps sports. It is therefore not surprising that card sheets have also become an important collector's phenomenon.
The cards come from the extensive collections of Milan Bednář and JUDr. Jiří Novotný, representatives of the South Bohemian section of the Playing Card Collectors Club. They are supplemented by objects mainly from the collections of the South Bohemian Museum, which illustrate the personalities themselves (domestic and foreign), depicted on the cards, or their creative activity in various aspects.
FRANTIŠKA DOUBKA'S NEW YEAR'S BIRTHDAY
Painter and graphic artist František Doubek (1940–2011) loved history and liked to depict it in various forms. His graphics are characterized by precise depictions, from architecture to portraits of monarchs and heraldic figures. The attention to detail is also evident in the small creations, which in this case are represented by New Year's cards, which you can enjoy here.
